On Tuesday, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu announced a comprehensive strategy aimed at developing a port-centric economy by leveraging the state's extensive 1,000-kilometer shoreline. The initiative includes plans to establish a new port or fishing harbor approximately every 50 kilometers along the coast.
A formal statement noted that Naidu indicated this initiative aims to boost economic development within the southern region of Andhra Pradesh and promote job creation alongside infrastructure improvements. According to the announcement, “Our new strategy focuses on developing a maritime-driven economy by leveraging Andhra Pradesh’s extensive 1,000-kilometer shoreline,” stated Naidu.
In line with the central government’s pledge during the bifurcation period, discussions were held for setting up a significant Ship Building and Repair Cluster in Dugarajapatnam within the Nellore district, as reported by PTI.
The initiative aims to cover more than 2,000 acres via a partnership between the Central government and the Andhra Pradesh state administration. Out of this total area, 1,000 acres will be allocated for primary ship construction facilities with the leftover 1,000 acres designated for supporting businesses.
The proposal encompasses a new-build port combined with a comprehensive shipyard for construction and maintenance. This setup will include four dry docks, fitting-out piers, as well as a ship elevator facility.
It is anticipated that the Centre will invest approximately Rs 3,500 crore in this project, with the Andhra Pradesh government providing land as its contribution towards equity.
The leader of TDP stated that a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) would draw in international shipbuilding companies, leading to an investment of Rs 26,000 crores. This initiative is expected to generate 5,000 direct employment opportunities along with approximately 30,000 indirect job openings.
The Chief Minister directed the officials to develop a comprehensive action plan aimed at accelerating the project. Additionally, he stressed enhancing cargo transportation through the Visakhapatnam Port, which is vital for the state's development.
