MANILA, Philippines – With the contest for Senate president underway, Senators Francis "Chiz" Escudero and newly elected Senator Vincente "Tito" Sotto III are apparently making efforts to secure backing from what’s referred to as the Duterte faction.
According to Senator Christopher "Bong" Go, Escudero and Sotto have already reached out to the Duterte camp — whether collectively or individually — to garner their backing.
Escudero currently holds the position of Senate leader, but ex-Senate president Sotto aims to contest his role during the 20th Congress.
The group supporting Duterte includes Go, Senator Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa, Robin Padilla, Imee Marcos, and Senator-elect Rodante Marcoleta—all recognized as supporters of ex-President Rodrigo Duterte.
Go also mentioned that the Duterte bloc has already consented to voting as a unified group.

"Originally, we could converse and exchange greetings at the proclamation event. Lines of communication stayed open as we had previously collaborated in past Congress sessions," Go stated in Tagalog during an interview in Manila on Wednesday.
When asked whether Escudero and Sotto were both trying to get his backing, Go responded, "Yes, from our group."
Gow has included that numerous individuals are engaging with them, and they remain receptive to every conversation.
"Our primary focus is to safeguard the nation's interests, enhance the well-being of all Filipinos, and maintain an autonomous Senate," he emphasized.
When questioned about seeking a Senate leader who would disregard the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte, Go stated that such matters are not discussed.
"The Senate operates differently. We refrain from discussing such matters," he stated.
Earlier, Dela Rosa revealed that Escudero had already contacted the group regarding the Senate leadership.
Sotto, who emerged victorious in the recent elections, has already stated his intention to reclaim leadership of the upper chamber if he manages to obtain the support of most of his fellow members.
He hasn't officially taken up his position as senator by June 30. / MR
