As stated by Professor Holger Volk from the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover in Germany, dementia frequently affects senior dogs and cats.

He mentions that roughly one out of every three canines between the ages of 12 and 13 exhibit signs of the ailment.

By the time they reach ages 15 to 16, approximately two out of every three dogs suffer from canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome.

About half of the cats aged 16 years and older suffer from dementia.

It is crucial to intervene early. As Volk, who leads the clinic for small pets, points out, "By the time pet owners spot something unusual, it frequently becomes nearly too late."

The illness is challenging to identify due to varying symptoms and the progressive nature of dementia development. Often, it comes with additional health issues and can be hard to distinguish from typical aging-related declines.

Alterations in an animal’s brain metabolism, along with inflammation and the buildup of proteins, can lead to nerve cells functioning improperly. These modifications result in animals becoming slower and sometimes forgetting learned instructions. Confusion might set in, leading to poor sleeping patterns as well as shifts in behavior.

Preventing issues can be effective. This may involve adopting a balanced diet low in sugar—alongside specific fatty acids that serve as energy sources for senior pets and reduce inflammation.

"Aside from a stimulant to aid with poor sleep or something to boost blood circulation, there aren’t many medication options," Volk explains.

It is crucial to closely monitor your pet for any alterations.

Cats prefer to stick to their independent nature — hence they often go unnoticed. According to the veterinarian, signs of feline dementia may involve looking visibly worried, being less energetic, and engaging less with others.

It is quite usual for cats to meow loudly and nearly screech during the nighttime, which indicates that the creature is attempting to find its bearings.

For Olli, maintaining an exercise regimen and sticking to a daily routine is crucial. Each morning, Hausmann gives his pug’s sore back legs a massage. Afterward, he takes Olli outside two to three times per day—always covering the same well-known short routes at a slow pace.

She explains that it assists him in coping.

Even a curb can be challenging. Following a brief stroll, Hausmann carries Olli over to place him on the couch at their residence.

In the evening, her pug frequently wakes up looking utterly bewildered. "Olli possesses a timid, mild temperament; he isn’t violent and fortunately continues to use the bathroom outdoors," explains Hausmann.

Transformed into human years, Olli is nearly a century old.

Volk notes that with numerous pets reaching an advanced age, there is increasing recognition of the associated challenges.

Nevertheless, he points out, veterinarians typically identify and address accompanying conditions like issues with the heart, kidneys, or joints.

The brain isn’t currently the center of attention, but this is changing gradually.

He understands that pet owners frequently benefit from receiving clear information and a definitive diagnosis of dementia.
