Experts Warn: Handle Durian with Care

It's durian season once more, however, consuming too much of this revered fruit could potentially endanger our well-being.

Dr Mastura Mohd Sopian from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), who specialises in family medicine, advised individuals suffering from diabetes, heart conditions, renal issues, or hypertension not to indulge excessively in food consumption.

"To reap the health advantages of durian without any concerns, consume a maximum of two medium portions daily, which is roughly equivalent to 80 grams," she advised.

Consuming excessive amounts of durian might adversely affect blood glucose levels, she pointed out.

Overindulging in durians can lead to discomfort and disturb regular metabolic processes.

"For individuals with long-term health issues, durian should ideally be eaten in limited quantities, sparingly or avoided completely," she noted.

Dr Mastura mentioned that some foods must be steered clear of while consuming durian, as this fruit includes carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals.

These encompass spicy foods, caffeine, fizzy drinks, sugary treats, desserts, soft drinks, and beverages with added sugars.

"Having these together with durian might lead to stomach issues and raise health dangers," she mentioned.

"Although responses can differ from person to person, durians are known for their 'heating' quality," explained Dr. Mastura.

The Penang Health Department nutritionist Zuhaira Harun mentioned that similar to other fruits, one should consume durian within the suggested portion size.

One portion of durian consists of two to three segments.

It contains a lot of calories and natural sugars.

"For individuals with diabetes, this could lead to a hazardous increase in blood glucose levels," she explained.

Zuhaida mentioned that consuming large amounts of durians can notably boost a person's total calorie intake.

She mentioned, “Occasionally, indulging excessively might result in various health problems like bloating, indigestion, or feeling overly warm.” She emphasized that one should practice moderation with every type of food.

Daniel Gooi, who heads Penang’s health committee, cautioned people to consume durians in moderation, particularly now during their prime season, to prevent possible health issues.

"Excessive indulgence, especially during humid conditions, may result in unease like a painful throat, loss of fluids, or issues with digestion," he mentioned.

"Consume ample amounts of water and practice moderation to thoroughly enjoy the fruit without facing negative consequences," Gooi suggested.
