MANILA, Philippines — Filipino entrepreneur and politician Mikee Romero has once more reached a significant achievement in sports, securing the No. 6 position in the Overall US Polo Ranking for April 2025.
He climbed up to the number 20 spot overall with 205 points, tying with the prolific scorer and 2024 US Open champion Poroto Cambiaso throughout the January to May 2025 winter polo season. This placed him securely amongst the elite group of both amateur and pro players across America.
This recent achievement follows Romero’s acknowledgment by the World Polo Tour, where he was ranked as the No. 24 amateur polo player globally, which makes him the top-rated Southeast Asian player in this international league.
The April rankings are topped by some of the globe’s leading 10-goal professionals: Tomas Panelo holds the first spot, followed closely by Juan Martín Nero at second place, with Adolfo Cambiaso placing third, and Barto Castagnola rounding out fourth. Romeros’ position at sixth amidst these legends underscores his strong competition record and high-level play during the US polo season.
At the same time, Romero’s highest-ranked polo pony, "Niki," received national acclaim, sharing the top spot as the No. 1 polo horse in the United States.
Niki ties for the top honor with "Catwoman" (played by Juan Martin Nero), "La Dolfina Binter," and "La Dolfina Jetcost" (both ridden by Adolfo Cambiaso), as well as "Oriental Oklahoma" (ridden by Tomas Panelo). Each of these has earned a flawless score of 30 points.
Romero's ascent was driven by his impressive showing in the 2025 Gauntlet of Polo, the United States' premier tournament which includes the C.V. Whitney Cup, the USPA Gold Cup, and the US Open Polo Championship.
While playing for his GlobalPort Polo Team, Romero created history by being part of the first Asian-based squad in many years to finish the Gauntlet. His team advanced to the semifinals of the C.V. Whitney Cup and the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open, competing against some of the top teams in the sport.
This is an incredibly significant moment," Romero stated. "Being amongst the top players in the US and witnessing Niki being acknowledged alongside some of the world’s greatest horses is a testament to all the hard work, preparation, and dedication invested in each match.
Thanks to these accomplishments, Romero further solidifies his position as one of the most esteemed personalities in global polo—both on and off the playing field.
