Rattan Dhillon, a social media user, criticized the Delhi government after it classified his father's Mercedes vehicle as "vintage scrap."

All buttons function perfectly—even the engine can do 0-100 km/h in only six to seven seconds. No emissions, no drama."
"But unfortunately, I now consider it nothing more than an 'old relic' simply because we're in a nation where those in power show absolutely no appreciation for automobiles! Let me dare the authorities to actually demonstrate that it causes pollution—they can't do it—but yet, they'll keep punishing us anyway!" the person went on.
Many other social media Users expressed empathy towards the individual.
Is it possible that a PIL cannot be filed? How can this happen?" questioned an upset netizen, as Dhillion responded with "Nobody will pay attention.
"Cars aren’t merely machines—they hold memories," shared another user.
Yet another person commented, "Ever since I was a student, this model has been my dream car. Such an iconic design!"
"This is outrageous and an obvious move to impose unjust taxes," said another person.
“Precisely what I’m saying. The idea of age-based obsolescence doesn’t make sense. Has anyone thought about how much garbage will be created once all those vehicles get scrapped?” questioned another user.
Yet, there were people who did not share his views.
"Why did you not contest the NGT decision in 2014? Why did you remain silent before the Supreme Court in 2018? And why didn’t you raise an objection to the government’s formulation of the scrap policy in 2021?" questioned a user.
A different user stated, "Just because your father drives a Mercedes doesn’t mean we’ll bend the rules for you. Either follow them or move somewhere with fewer regulations."
Delhi’s vehicle scrappage policy
In accordance with directives from the Supreme Court and the National Green Tribunal (NGT), diesel vehicles over 10 years old and petrol vehicles exceeding 15 years of age are not permitted to operate in... Delhi-NCR .
These vehicles will lose their registration and either need to be junked or transformed into electric models. Should they still be driven, the cars may be confiscated and destroyed.
The Delhi government has implemented a vehicle scrappage policy effective July 1, 2025, which prohibits refuelling of petrol cars over 15 years old and diesel vehicles more than 10 years old.
From July 1st, 2025 onwards, owners of petrol-driven automobiles aged above fifteen years and diesel-powered ones exceeding ten years will not be allowed to get them fuelled under Delhi’s new scrapping regulation.
Under Delhi's newly introduced vehicular scrappage plan, as of July 1, 2025, only those petrol-run motorcars younger than fifteen years and dieselpowered models less than decade-old can continue receiving fuelling services.

Owners of vehicles can choose to submit a written commitment stating they will not drive their vehicles within Delhi. Alternatively, they may acquire a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for moving the vehicle outside the city.
