BYD's Revolutionary EV Charges in 5 Minutes and Boasts a Spacious Front Trunk

The Han L sedan and Tang L SUV are notable for BYD's Megawatt charging, but they don't skimp on storage space, either.

  • The BYD Han L sedan and Tang L both have 160-liter front trunks, or "frunks."
  • Since electric vehicles don’t require engines, they provide innovative storage possibilities such as frontal compartments.
  • BYD says they lead globally, but some American electric vehicles want to challenge that claim.

Okay, BYD So, you create a car with 1,000-kilowatt fast-charging capability that can add 250 miles of range within five minutes. It’s also available as a plug-in hybrid and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than three seconds. Impressive. However, what about the front trunk?

Well, it turns out that's pretty spectacular too. It seems like this pair of electrified vehicles can do almost anything.

While in China this past week, I made a point of seeking out BYD's pair of ultra-fast-charging EVs, the Han L sedan and Tang L crossover Those are the vehicles that can be used. BYD's new Megawatt charging system to add 250 miles of range in just five minutes, with peak charging speeds of 1,000 kilowatts. (If you need context, that's four times the max charging speed of a Tesla Model Y and Model 3.)

BYD Han L, Tang L

I can assure you that they appear quite understated in reality; the Han L seems somewhat reminiscent of a Honda Accord, whereas the Tang L comes across as fairly generic. Grand Theft Auto -car vibes.

Beneath their exteriors, these two vehicles stand out as exceptional electric cars equipped with some of the globe’s leading-edge technology. They feature an 83.2 kWh BYD “Blade” battery which offers a range from approximately 373 miles (601 kilometers) to 436 miles (701 kilometers), according to China’s more generous CLTC test cycle.

Similar to many Chinese vehicles, these plug-in hybrids also boast generous battery capacities; they come equipped with a 29.4 kWh BYD Blade battery paired with a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and have an estimated combined range of 870 miles (1,400 kilometers).

Amazing features across the board. Now, what about the front trunk? Let me assure you, it's spacious. In fact, very spacious.

Both cars share a trunk that comes in at 160 liters, or 5.6 cubic feet, or 42.2 liquid gallons. It's quite voluminous, especially for a sedan and a fairly midsize crossover.

What struck me the most about these frunks (which are identical for both the crossover and the sedan) was their impressive depth. You could comfortably store a whole batch of goods from a bulk purchase at Costco in here. Actually, someone petite enough and perhaps quite flexible from regular yoga practice might manage to crawl inside with the lid shut.

Onvo L60 Frunk

Currently, BYD asserts that this is the world's largest frunk Respectfully, I disagree. The new Onvo L60 SUV , boasts an impressive 8.4 cubic feet (240 liters) of storage space—which allegedly makes it the biggest in China, as per reports. CnEVPost .

In America, the Lucid Gravity and the Ford F-150 Lightning boast larger front trunks with capacities of 8 cubic feet (227 liters) and 14 cubic feet (400 liters), respectively. Meanwhile, the Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV provide 10.7 cubic feet each, whereas the Hummer EV offers up to 11.3 cubic feet. While America may not lead in battery tech as seen in China, when it comes to storage space in their full-sized electric vehicles, they come out ahead.

While a large front trunk might not be the standout feature of BYD's new L series vehicles and their E-Platform, it is certainly a pleasant additional advantage to an already highly sophisticated car that excels in many areas. During my visit to China, I had the opportunity to test-drive both the Han L and Tang L models, so stay tuned for further detailed insights into these automobiles coming up shortly.
