Flames Erupt in High-Rise Across from O2 Arena: Major Fire Engulfs Residential Block!

A fire erupted in a residential building located in the eastern part of the city. London this evening, with dozens of firefighters rushing to the scene.

Fire could be seen coming from a balcony at the New Providence Wharf near Canary Wharf in East London, with thick black smoke rising upwards.

One local resident, who runs a Facebook group for the area, wrote: ‘Flames reducing I have been told but be ready to evacuate.

'A second fire has occurred in this building; flames were seen emanating from the balcony. The previous fire highlighted significant fire safety concerns within the complex.'

The building is situated on the north side of the Thames, right across from the O2 Arena.

The blaze, which has since been brought under control, started on the part of the structure overlooking the river at approximately 8:47 pm, complicating external efforts to reach it.

The block is in the same development where another significant fire broke out in 2021.

More than 40 people needed treatment after the blaze ripped through the 19-storey building four years ago.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said tonight: ‘Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were called to a flat fire at New Providence Wharf in Poplar.

'A portion of a three-room apartment on the 13th floor of a 20-story building was affected by a fire. Additionally, a section of the balcony connected to this flat was also damaged by the flames.'

'A single individual received treatment at the location for smoke inhalation from the London Ambulance Service.'

The brigade got 26 alerts about the fire and sent teams from Poplar, Millwall, Plaistow, Shadwell, and nearby fire stations.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Following the catastrophic blaze at Grenfell Tower, the panels on the structures at New Providence Wharf were swapped out to enhance safety.

The development project by creators Ballymore appears to be finished, as the scaffolding installed during construction is not seen in videos of the fire posted online.

A community member shared online that the most recent major fire occurred nearly four years prior to this day. They noted: "It appears that the corrective actions were effective. Previously, we had hazardous cladding and wooden balconies which have since been replaced."

'In the past, when the entire building had to be evacuated, the fire spread rapidly, and the fire safety features such as fire doors and AOVs did not work properly. This time around, however, only the problematic section was cleared.'
