Kenya Airways Negotiates Aviation Support for Tanzania Amid EU Ban

Kenya Airways is engaging in discussions aimed at providing assistance to Tanzanian airlines after the recent prohibition imposed by the European Union (EU).

On June 3rd, the European Union revised its Air Safety List, banning airlines from Tanzania and Suriname from operating within the EU due to their failure to comply with established international safety standards.

The European Union indicated that the decision stemmed from significant safety issues uncovered through evaluations carried out by EU aviation safety specialists. It also highlighted that the national aviation authorities of Tanzania and Suriname did not guarantee adherence to global safety regulations for airlines.

The European Union pointed out various operational and regulatory deficiencies, including a lack of adequately trained staff, inefficient monitoring procedures in aircraft operations and maintenance certification, as well as failure to meet global safety requirements by the national aviation agencies and licensed airlines from both nations.

Kenya Airlines will assist Tanzania's aviation sector.

At a recent press roundtable, Kenya Airways' Chief Executive Officer, Allan Kilavuka, highlighted the importance of cooperation among African airline companies to achieve long-term success and operational sustainability.

He pointed out that the airline is engaging with aviation stakeholders in Tanzania to identify areas where Kenya Airways can offer assistance to help them achieve established standards.

“We’ve been holding talks aimed at assisting Air Tanzania to enhance performance in areas flagged for improvement,” said Kilavuka in response to a question raised by Axofa.co.ke. “We’re looking into signing an MoU which would allow us to begin working together more closely. Given their size relative to international carriers, collaboration seems like the most effective strategy for African airlines. While nothing has officially been finalized just yet, ongoing conversations remain positive. Additionally, our position is to urge Kenya’s aviation regulator, the KCAA, to extend technical backing to its Tanzanian counterpart, the TCAAThis cooperation stands to mutually benefit both parties.”
