Directed by Fifth Solomon under his newly launched studio Passion 5, ‘Lasting Moments’ is a poignant romantic drama that explores the fragility of relationships under pressure and the enduring strength of true love.
Starring compelling portrayals from Sue Ramirez and JM de Guzman, the movie reaches emotional peaks and devastating troughs that numerous pairs may recognize all too well.
A Familiar Yet Emotional Ride. At its core, ‘Lasting Moments’ follows the story of Aki (JM de Guzman) and Pia (Sue Ramirez), a young couple dreaming of a future together. When Pia is offered a life-changing job opportunity in Singapore by her boss Carlo—who also happens to have feelings for her—their love is tested by distance, ambition, and temptation. As Pia’s career thrives, Aki spirals into addiction and heartbreak, and the two eventually part ways.
Fast forward five years, Pia returns to the Philippines, now successful but emotionally trapped in a controlling relationship with Carlo. She seeks closure and maybe a second chance with Aki—only to find that the man she once loved has changed beyond recognition.
Acting . Sue Ramirez brings a natural and grounded energy to Pia. She shines as an ambitious woman determined to rise above her circumstances, and her performance captures the essence of empowerment and regret. Meanwhile, JM de Guzman delivers a quietly powerful portrayal of a man broken by loss and struggling with his demons. Even if his physical appearance could’ve used a little polishing, he embodies the emotional weight of Aki’s journey with sincerity.
Their chemistry is undeniable. From flirtatious banter to heartbreaking confrontations, Sue and JM make you believe in the love their characters once shared—and what they may have lost for good.
A Tearjerker That Overstays Its Welcome. Indeed, the movie succeeds in achieving its aim to evoke tears from viewers. Several scenes deeply resonate with emotions, and the soundtrack, 'How Did You Know,' intensifies the sentimental impact, particularly during the film’s peak sequences.
Nonetheless, the tempo—particularly during the initial part—needs some improvement. Various sequences seem redundant, with emotional moments repeated in the latter half that had been thoroughly set up beforehand. Cutting down these parts might enhance the movie’s effectiveness without compromising the growth of the characters.
Even so, if you've watched Fifth Solomon's previous creations, 'Lasting Moments' emerges as his most refined and consistent movie to date. There has been notable enhancement in both narrative technique and post-production work, positioning this piece as a strong competitor within the domestic romantic drama genre.
One inevitable distraction: Sue Ramirez’s eyelashes. Immaculately curled and heavily mascared, they remain unfazed from morning till night—even through tears, slumber, and sorrow. Initially, this may divert your attention, but after embracing it as an integral part of the Sue experience, you'll find yourself better appreciating the narrative.
Axofa ‘s Verdict. "Lasting Moments" might cover well-trodden ground, yet it approaches this terrain with genuine emotion and sincerity. This film serves as an affirmation that even though love isn’t perfect, its impact can endure for a lifetime. Though flawed, it remains authentic, which ultimately renders it worthwhile viewing.
