The Makati Business Club (MBC) has expressed complete backing for the recently named Bureau of Customs (BOC) chief, describing Ariel Nepomuceno as someone with "exceptional honesty."
MBC Executive Director Rafael "Apa" Ongpin stated that Nepomuceno possesses the ability and demonstrated leadership skills necessary to implement essential reforms and advance the much-needed modernization of the agency.
"We talked about him at the Makati Business Club. Several members know who he is—he reportedly comes from the corporate world. His track record speaks well for itself," Ongpin remarked, capturing how the business circle initially viewed Nepomuceno.
He noted that Nepomuceno, with prior significant positions in both public service and corporate settings, was broadly anticipated to introduce a clearer focus on achieving outcomes and greater transparency at Customs.
Ongpin stated that the support from the MBC will help push forward current reforms at Customs, which has always been seen as an important area for improving trade efficiency and combating smuggling.
“He seems quite intelligent—he stays current with technological advancements—and possesses strong moral principles. Therefore, we hold high expectations for him," said Ongpin about Mr. Nepomuceno."
Before leading the Bureau of Customs, Nepomuceno served as executive director of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and also held the position of undersecretary at the Office of Civil Defense.
