Microsoft Employee Shocks Team: Manager Fired Mid-Meeting, Claims "They're Letting Go of Good People"

Microsoft is under renewed examination after announcing another round of widespread job cuts. According to reports, the company headquartered in Redmond, Washington, plans to eliminate around 9,000 positions as part of an initiative aimed at simplifying processes, reducing managerial levels, and boosting productivity across the organization.

These major workforce cuts are affecting multiple departments worldwide, especially within Xbox ...and various innovative departments, resulting in sudden job cuts affecting many workers. While the reduction of 9,000 jobs represents about four percent of Microsoft's overall staff adjustments, impacted employees have expressed deep frustration over these changes on online forums and social networking sites.

Initial details about the job cuts are beginning to surface, with notable insights coming from Amanda Goodall, popularly recognized as 'The Job Chick' (on X under @thejobchick). Serving as CEO of EdgePulse, which specializes in workforce analytics and industry predictions, Goodall continues to relay personal stories shared directly with her. One particular story recounted how someone kept their role yet was taken aback when their supervisor got suddenly laid off.

"A conference call was set up with my M2 and the whole team, titled 'FY26 Business Strategy.' During the call, we were informed that everyone else is secure except for our manager—she had just been terminated, and this would be her final working day. Numerous colleagues received comparable notifications, with some entire departments being laid off collectively during these mass video calls," shared the anonymous worker via direct message.

Is Microsoft showing no concern during layoffs?

In a separate post where she shared another experience, it was mentioned that Microsoft is laying off employees irrespective of their skills or how crucial they are to the team. "Out of our original group of nine at Microsoft, only four others besides me are still here," one individual explained. "We've had layoff rounds before—some even very significant—I recall almost ten thousand people being laid off just three days after I joined. But this feels different now. It’s not about removing underperformers or shutting down unprofitable projects; these reductions seem nonsensical as many capable individuals who contributed significantly towards achieving exceptional company performance lately have also gone."

"I'm really upset about the talent we're losing, especially someone who was not only the finest manager I've ever worked with but also made me stay loyal to this company for over ten years—I believe this marks the end of the traditional Microsoft culture. The aggressive approach borrowed from Amazon doesn't sit well with me personally, even if speaking up could cost me my job," they said further.

An additional staff member expressed: "It deeply saddens me that today saw the dismissal of over 9,000 individuals spanning various studios. However, what truly angers me further is how nearly every layoff occurred within or related to Microsoft’s own studios. A coworker of mine also got affected — an individual who dedicated way beyond ten years with remarkable commitment, only to face such abrupt termination. At the same time, stockholders rejoice while top executives receive their incentives. Enough must be enough."

Meanwhile, Microsoft Continues to defend job cuts as an element of extensive organizational overhaul. "We're carrying out essential structural adjustments needed to optimally prepare the company and our employees for achievement within a constantly evolving market environment," stated a representative.
