NATO is confronting increasingly intricate and interconnected challenges, yet these threats still pose “no match” for the collective strength of the alliance, stated the newly appointed U.S. general leading NATO’s military efforts during an address on Friday upon assuming office.
“These are significant times,” stated U.S. Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich after taking over as NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) during a command transition event held in Mons, Belgium.
"The challenges facing the alliance and our partners are growing more complex. The threats we face are only becoming more intertwined. But they are no match for the unity, the resolve, and the shared purpose" within NATO, he added.
Grynkewich, who was appointed by US President Donald Trump, confirmed by the US Senate and approved by NATO's North Atlantic Council, said that he intends to "maintain the momentum" from his predecessor, General Christopher Cavoli, in transforming the alliance's command operations.

The Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), traditionally held by a U.S. military officer, oversees the planning and implementation of all NATO operational activities, such as determining which forces are needed for specific missions. Additionally, they provide guidance to both NATO’s civilian leadership and military bodies. In response to an attack on any NATO country, SACEUR is tasked with carrying out every appropriate defense action under their command to safeguard or recover allied territories.
The position has no fixed term with previous SACEURs in function from one to eight years.

General Cavoli referred to his replacement as "the right officer for this moment."
"He will lead our Alliance into its future, a future that we know is going to be in dangerous time. We know that future will be about collective defence, and it's a future that is going challenge us to rise to the heights that we can achieve together," he also said.
Last month, the Allies reached an agreement to increase their collective defence expenditure benchmark substantially, raising it from 2% of GDP to 5%. This new target is divided into two parts: 3.5% will be allocated specifically for essential military expenditures such as equipment, while the remaining 1.5% will support broader national defense initiatives like multi-use infrastructure and cybersecurity measures.
